Product Description

Communicate with babies -- even before they can speak.

Before a baby can talk and before a toddler can say completely understandable words, they have important things to say. Babies and children are often more interested in connecting with parents or other caregivers than playing with their toys.

The Baby Signing Book uses American Sign Language, which is ideal for babies and toddlers because:

  • The ability of babies to understand what they see develops well before their ability to understand what they hear.
  • The ability of a baby to speak develops between the ages of 12 and 18 months, while the ability to use American Sign Language develops between 6 and 12 months.
  • Babies understand what they see much earlier than typically expected, and are able to sign well before they are able to talk.

The Baby Signing Book teaches parents 300 developmentally appropriate American Sign Language signs. With clear instructions for every sign, memory aid, song and game, the learning in this program is easy to follow and, most important, fun for all. Language milestones are charted throughout the book so progress can be charted. The book also features a variety of visual highlights that emphasize key concepts and interesting tips.

Adults can customize a program according to the family's needs and aspirations. With the dictionary of 300 symbols, this handbook is clearly the most user-friendly and comprehensive baby signing book available.

Customer Reviews

A great resource5
I love the DVD set Baby Signing Time by Rachel de Azevedo Coleman, but my daughter and I were ready for more words. Since there are only two DVDs out so far, we needed another resource. This book is great! The first third of this book is broken into the following chapters:
1. A Quick Course in Baby Signing
2. Sign Language Development
3. Signing with Your Young Baby (0-6 mos)
4. " (6-12 mos)
5. " (12-18 mos)
and so on through 3 years
Also included "Signing with Your Special Needs Child" and "How to Sign and Sing." (Classic songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider, "Old MacDonald" and "The Wheels on the Bus"; and ones that are put to classic songs but that help reinforce your sign-vocab like the "Change Your Diaper Song" put to "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain.")

The rest of the book is a picture dictionary of words you will want to use when communicating with your child. Pretty much every word I have looked up in order to sing nursery songs is there. Sometimes I look for a word and it isn't there, but this doesn't happen often. And these are usually words that are not specifically geared for the little guys. It makes me hopeful that there will be a part two one day.

The pictures are very helpful and clearly drawn and labeled. I keep it in my nursery and refer to it whenever I am talking to my daughter and don't have a "key word" in my sign language knowledge.

If you are looking to get started with sign language, I recommend the DVDs I mentioned at the beginning AND this book.

ASL made easy for parents and kids5
I am an RN, my daughter is 9 months old, I have been using this book in addition to the Signing Times DVD's , it is great, easy to understand, and well organized. It is actually based on ASL, not improvised signs, my baby already knows about 5 signs, and attempts her own versions of them too.My 6 year has taken an interest in teaching her baby sister as well

Comprehensive, signs sometimes hard to understand4
As an English speaking parent in Switzerland, we liked the idea of ASL. The book is very comprehensive and well set up, the only negative for me is that the signs are not always super clear, and you have to guess a little sometimes.

Still, it is definatly reccommendable and I would buy it again
